Mathematics Statement of INTENT

Why do we teach this? Why do we teach it in the way we do?

Mathematics is an important creative discipline that helps us to understand and change the world. We want all pupils at Spire to experience the beauty, power and enjoyment of mathematics and develop a sense of curiosity about the subject with a clear understanding.

At Spire, we foster positive attitudes which promote the fact that ‘We can all do maths!’ We believe all pupils can achieve, so at Spire we teach through small, manageable steps. We take a Mastery approach to ensure that our pupils acquire a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of mathematics.

We aim for all pupils to:

• Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately across all areas of the curriculum
• Be able to solve problems by applying their skills and knowledge to a variety of situations, both routine and non-routine. Linking mathematics to real-life scenarios is what we strive to achieve.
• Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.

• Measuring - Read, record, compare and order length, height, temperature and capacity
• Time - Tell & write time to 5 mins including 1/4 past, 1/2 past, o'clock. 
• Fractions - Recognise, find and write 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 2/4, 3/4 of length, shape, quantity
• Statistics - Create and interpret pictograms, tally charts and tables
• Position/direction - Use mathematical vocabulary to describe  1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and whole turns.
